why it is that no matter how well my wedge game is, as soon as I *need* to make a decent swing I'll dropkick that 10 yard chip?

Ok so it's not every time, but it sure stands out when it does happen!

The hardest part of the game is only 6 inches long. ..Between our ears. Bob Rotella has made a ton of money working on that aspect of the game. Need to stay within the shot, not that there is any more pressure to succeed than on a driving range.

That sounds like nerves to me.

The best thing to do when you have a shot you need is to play a shot you could do blind folded. The more fancy the shot, no matter how confident you are, the more likely to screw it up. I always try to play a low runner with the wedge if I have an important touchy shot with a wedge. I know I can at least get a good strike if not get it close with that shot.

Tim, bet if you went to see your pro he could give you a couple of drills that could give that confidence you need......... Cheers, Chuck......
  6. I agree with Don, it's between the ears. If you're anything like me, halfway through the swing the brain says "you're swinging too hard and if you skull it you'll end up in the next area code". So I decelerate the swing and the club digs in and the shot goes halfway to nowhere. All I do is to just keep practicing and hope that I don't think too much. Good luck.

I agree with Don, a large part of it is mental. Rely on your process. Go through your setup - and make that consistent just like putting. Try making a few nice practice strokes just brushing the grass, pick your landing spot and focus only on that. Then hit your shot. Hope this helps!

If you scared of a certain shot , try using a different club and playing it a different way

Pressure to get it close. Relax and have realistic expectations. Everyone wants to get it close but if you imagine just getting it within 3 yards and it goes within 1 foot you'd be happy. If you expect to get it within 1 yard and it goes 2+ yards past you're not going to be happy. Main thing is to relax, more times than not you'll put a better swing on it.

I feel you. When this happens to me I am a little uncomfortable with the lie or situation. Two things happen and if you think about it you can control these two things. First my tempo speeds up from my normal practice swings and two I tend to look up when my club has not made contact with anything. So, concentrate on keeping the same tempo as your practice swing and keep looking where you want the club to make contact. This is just a matter of will power and concentration.

Simple - you have to have the confidence to know you are going to hit the shot. Be like a robot out there. Know what you need to do, and then execute it perfectly.
