  1. I'm curious what stretches players find most helpful just prior to playing your round.

I always keep a fitness rubber band in the bag and use it to stretch the back, legs and rotator cuffs. It doesn't weigh much at all and a lot of exercises and stretches can be found on TPI and youtube.

I never stretch or exorcise and find I’m getting a stiff back around the back nine and then I’m all arms and the ball goes nowhere near my target......
This is something I need to work on soon.

I blew the L5-S1 disk in my lower back nine years ago. The stretches and core training taught to me by my chiropractor and physical therapist have kept me playing without surgery. I sit at a desk all day, which is a killer and stretching the hamstrings, hips, core, etc., is a must before playing.

Know the feeling, had L5-S1 fusion and it was best thing I've ever done.. True, working the core/abs is a must!
  6. Recovering from neck surgery, no golf until mid June. I agree I will be doing a lot of stretching prior to golf in the future
  7. My biggest area of concern is hips. My back and hip flexors get tight, so actually laying on the floor and stretching is a part of every single round.

I've had issues with my lower back tightening and causing extreme pain...last time i went to the chiro (who is also an avid golfer) I asked how to prevent it. He said: increase core strength, flexibility and a nice and easy warm up on the range. That doesn't mean ripping 100% 9 iron, or any other club for that matter.... it meas hitting some half swing shots with different clubs and ball placement and actually letting those muscle warm up.

Well after last night, I WILL be stretching before playing. Hitting a 6 iron from 150, not over swinging at all, pulled hamstring in right leg. The pain just about dropped me. Had to leave after 7 holes, hoping for a quick recovery since I am signed up for a tournament next Friday.
  9. As the guy said, youtube has a lot of advice. Depends on your age, also, one thing for sure if you don't do something you wil only compound any issues you have with joints or muscles , and you may have noticed that it takes a few holes before you start hitting the ball well. Unless you are Rory turning up to whip a Yank at the Ryder cup. There all you need is a chocolate bar, a ball and a bag if bats Have a nice day.

Does grip it and rip it count??
I don’t warm up at all.
That’s maybe why my golf has been so bad lately

I carry a stretching device in my bag. It's a grip on a flexible shaft and has a heavy ball on the end. You swing it and the shaft flexes around you, stretching you gently more than you could with just a regular club. I also tend to brace myself against the cart and stretch my legs and back.

Typical bending over at the waist, hamstring stretches, core rotation with club, obliques stretches (side to side) I workout 3 days a week full body including core so doesn't take much for to get loose.

I love the Orange Whip for warming up before a round or before hitting up a range session. They're rather pricey for what they are and knock offs can be had for less, but the OW really helps to loosen and stretch me out quickly just as Dennis has described above. I find that I have a much better swing off the first tee using it vs grabbing two clubs and swinging them for a few minutes as the OW also really helps ingrain a great tempo.

I second the Orange Whip. It is good for loosening up and tempo prior to a round.

I stretch everyday regardless of whether or not I am playing. I focus on my hip flexor, hamstrings and quads. I too have a ruptured L4 & L5 so my focusing on my lower back is especially important. I work out 4 days a week focusing on different parts of my body. I devote an entire day to just my core.

I normally stretch with my 7 iron and start swinging. Then I bounce around from club to club. No particular order just hit till I feel ready.
  17. Just like posted above, I use some bands/surgical tube to get some initial stretching in, and then after that I do half swings and then full swings with two clubs similar to a baseball player in the on deck circle. After that’s done I then start with half wedge shot and work my way up. This routine seems to get me loose and prepared for the rounds ahead.

    Lethbridge,

After having a discectomy on L4/L5 I stretch core and hips by doing rotation stretches recommended by my physio. He has me as well strengthening the core it has allowed me to continue to golf pain free.
