  1. Hello,

I dedided to buy a set of 718 AP3 with the following specifications:

    - Heads: 5-P, W - Lenght: +1/2" - Shaft: UST Recoil 65 F4 - Loft: standard - Lie: standard - Grip: Golf Pride Tour Velvet Midsize - Swingweight: D1 for 5-9 and D3 for P & W

Before placing the order I posted a question in this forum in the fitting section and I got a fast and kind response by Cathy that the specs were ok and the swinweight request was achievable (D3 +-1sw), recommending me to specify it at the order process.

Yesterday I placed the order and today I got the following response from my retailer in Madrid, Spain:

    - "Titleist says that your specs are Tour Only (?) and that cannot be achieved in retail... They also added that you could place the order but Titleist would not garantee that the clubs will arrive with the requested specifications"

To say the least, I am shocked.

Neither my shafts or grips are exotic (they are both standard) nor the extra lenght request or the swingweight is difficult to achieve... As a matter of fact when you add and substract the swigngweight due to the extra lenght, lower shaft weight and slightly higher weight of the grip, the number is pretty much the same than a set of standard clubs.

Does the response mean that Titleist Europe (UK & Ireland) is not capable of deliver custom clubs or I just got missinformed by Titleist Spain?

I honestly don't have a clue on how to proceed with this issue or if I should search for a different set of irons...:-(

Many thanks in advance for your help. Cheers.

  2. Hi Jorge,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

We are able to achieve D3 settings but due to the lengthening of the shafts by 1/2" it adds to the swingweight of the clubs by 2 to 3 swingweights and this can then be difficult to bring back down to D1.

It is achievable for Tour but this is only because they are able to remove weight from the head in ways which fall outside of our manufacturing processes and can fall outside of our tolerances. The additional weight added by the midsize grip also brings the swingweight up.

Can I ask where you were fitted into these swingweights?

    Kind regards,
    Luke

    Luke thank you very much.

We don’t have the luxury of a proper fitting structure in Madrid, Spain. Whenever there is an event to sell clubs, most of the brands normally hire a Pro that in many cases is not a certified clubfitter and only ‘supervises’ you while hitting range balls...:-(

Because of the above, I had to try different heads and shafts with the Titleist cart in a store in Madrid that has a driving range and a Foresight launch monitor.

After hitting many balls and understanding myself wich heads feel better and what shaft combinations work better with them, I asked in this forum under the Fitting Section, what swingweight could be achieved with my specs. Cathi very kindly responded that with the combination of longer and lighter shafts and heavier grips, that D3 +-1 should be no problem for Titleist and encouraged me to specify it in the moment of the order.

I know my specs very good based on many fittings (mainly png) I went through in the last 20 years. In this fittings I always get longer shaft recommendations (1/2”), more upright heads (2 degrees) and slightly bigger grips (1/32 or 1/16). Additionally I’ve been playing with steel shafts in stiff flex and my preferred swingweight has always been D2/D3.

For the first time ever, I decided to buy a set of Titleist and to try much lighter graphite shafts (65g vs 100-110g of lightweight steel) and based on my specs and on this Forum recommendation I came up with a swingweight that is basically achievable (the math is very simple: 40g lighter shaft=-4sw points, +1/2”=+3sw points, 5 g heavier grips= -1 sw point. I total I will loose around 2sw points compared with a set of standard lenght steel clubs of D2/D3).

If you tell me that it would be easier to ask for D2 irons I would not have any problem ordering them.... My real problem is that Titleist Spain will not place an order to Titleist UK of ANY swingweight cause they cannot garantee the result (?).

My request for help is basically cause after all the pain that I went through to get here, I can’t order in Spain a set of clubs with specs validated by Titleist with the excuse that UK will not be able to build them and I think that is not only unfair for Titleist UK but also not true.

I am sorry for the long post and hope that this could help on finding the way to finally get my Titleist clubs.
    Thanks and cheers,
    Jorge

    Hi Jorge,
Sorry to hear about your experience. I'm a bit curious who actually got you fit in this rare custom settings.
Lost & Lie are STD but you do have different shaft. That is not surprising what surprises me is how possibly on earth are you fitted in these swingweights? This looks very strange to me.
Are you fitted by an experienced clubfitter, have you tested multiple shafts, heads, but also did you use perhaps swing monitor such as FlightScope or Trackman?
In my opinion you should get at least a 2nd fitting from an experienced club fitter. And also please try AP3, AP2 with multiple set of shafts, lofts and lie. I would be surprised if the same fitter would fit you into these rare specs.

Because the way you write it, they way you shared your specs... sounds more like a local club pro who watched a little bit too much Sky Sports (inside the tour trucks) and got you into these specs. But again.. that's my opinion. I am curious who fitted you into this.

Regarding the Tour Only thing... I can answer that. As you might have read on this page I've been on tour for over 10 years. I visit the tour trucks daily. When I see the Titleist reps working on clubs they can do pretty much everything these days. Talking about the weights indeed in the face.. they remove those and fill them up with hot glue (also amount is important, less / more will effect also the sound of the club). Also bringing more layers of tape of a heavier grip on the end should fix your issue. But again... if it's up to me get a 2nd clubfitting session.

    All the best, happy swings,

    Bart

  5. Bart thank you very much.

If you look to my response to Luke above you’ll find out how (painfully) I got to my current situation...:-)

Loft is standard and lie is also standard due to the fact that the lie angle in the AP3 is very upright (62 degrees in the 5 iron) and perfectly matches my specs of 2up of less modern clubs. Also a swingweight in the D1-D3 range for a set of men’s clubs is fairly common.

I wish I clould have access to a experienced clubfitter.... Only enjoyed it in my trips to the US and that is the reason why I know very well the specs that I have to ask for. I have to say that despite 20 years of golf and the improvements in my game, my specifications have not changed much except for the fact that after 14 holes I find it more and more difficult to properly hit my longer steel irons... That is precisely why I wanted to try the Recoils.

I agree with your comments about the tour vans/trucks capabilities and believe me that if I was trying to ask for a swingweight uncommon (like D5 upwards or C9 downwards) it would be very understandable the kind of response I’ve got.

If anyone at Titleist UK (they build the clubs for Spain) could give me a hint of what can I order, I promise I will adapt myself.

    Again. thanks for helping.
    Cheers,
    Jorge
