  1. It was lovely to put the shorts on and play a couple of times in “perfect” conditions with glorious weather and the course in great condition.

Our fairways had really suffered in the autumn one over winter, lacking grass cover in various places. Fortunately this month’s rain and a bit has warmth has seen a fantastic recovery. The green staff have left the grass on the fairways a little higher than usual - nice for great lies but also means drives don’t quite get the normal roll. The greens are rolling beautifully with good pace and have really firmed up, with pitch marks now reduced to slight dents, if any mark at all.

Who managed to get out and are you seeing a real change in course conditions now?

My club is in a similar situation. Greens are beautiful - true, even paced and quick. As goods they have ever been.
They're a credit to the staff and the care they lavish on them - unlike some members, who can't see their own pitch marks!
The fairways are in very good condition and like yours, have been left a touch longer than would be expected. It's a mixed blessing but understandable as you say. Not quite the chequer board perfection of some years but that may come later in the year. Weather conditions are not as predictable as they once were...
First cut rough is good and juicy but playable with care.
Some bits of "water damage" can be found at the back of greens and where water gathers around raised teeing areas. This gives tufty grass and bare patches.
After all we have been through over the past 18 months, I'm a happy the club and course are in such good order.

  3. Had the pleasure and honour of playing the new Dumbarnie Links in Fife yesterday on a glorious bank holiday Monday here in Scotland and having only opened on the 29th May, 2020 it is in fantastic condition and was a real test of your playing ability. Parred the first and last to start and end on a great note with the other sixteen holes proving the point that I’m an amateur but ending with a 6 over par nett score was the least of my worries. The day was spent with three of my great friends from Blairgowrie Golf Club, which was a special treat for one of their 75th’s and you could not have asked for better weather (albeit windy, but that’s links golf) on a fantastic course in great condition. A real joy to play and great achievement for all concerned at Dumbarnie Links considering the recent weather we’ve had in May - well done!

Some place we played it in October 2020 very very very windy but didn’t spoil the day as the rain stayed off playing the castle course at St. Andrews next Friday as a scot already checked the forecast and looks mint for the day
  5. Hey AJP

Awesome picture! I agree with you, course conditions are great at the moment.

I've always said that in UK, April / May are the generally the best months for golf. Plenty of previous rainfall combined with the coming sunshine.

My golf course is in 'close to' perfect condition. They usually wait until late June / early July to really ramp up the green speeds.
