Struggling with AP2s

  1. I made the Switch from GI TM Burners to AP2's in Dec of 2016. I was 7 Handicap looking to take my game to the next level. I can move the ball fairly well right to left but wanted to increase my movement left to right. I was not getting that with the TM's thus the switch. Since I have been playing the AP2's my handicap has stayed the same but my ball striking is very inconsistent. A lot of off the toe hits. I've had them in play over a year and although my scoring was more consistent 74-82 my ball striking was as inconsistent as ever. With my GI irons was able to get down a 4.9 index at one point. I haven't been there with these irons. is it time to change back? any feedback is appreciated?

While I don't think anyone on the forum will tell you to leave Titleist clubs, you do love golf 1st and have to do what's right for you. I would suggest getting fitted, again as you swing may have changed over the year. Best of luck

Did you get fit for them? Maybe the shaft is to short or the lie is incorrect for you.

I had my lies adjusted on my AP2's and it made a world of a difference.

    Hi Burns,
Great scores, but I can understand the frustration with inconsistency. I battle that in my long game.

How did you come to the decision to put in play your current AP2s? In other words, did you go through a full fitting? What did that fitting process look like?

I play the 714 AP2s and love them. But like any club, you need to make sure the entire package (shaft, head, length, weight, etc) work for what you are trying to accomplish. Personally, I have hit the AP2 with various shafts and some are just plain BAD for my game. But with the right setup you can't pry them out of my hands.

You might be better off talking to your local PGA pro, who could diagnose your challenges, better than guys on the board.

You should start with a pro for swing eval and potentially a fitting. Going with a less forgiving iron may require a swing change to "grow into" a better player's iron. Beyond that, the AP3 may provide the forgiveness and work-ability your are seeking. The end goal should be the right marriage of ball-striking and forgiveness.

I don't think that your situation is unique in that when a person moves from GI irons to something of a players iron and its more compact head (or less forgiving) that there is a transition period. That transition period will undoubtedly vary depending on the person involved as they try to refine their swing to a point where they are making more consistent contact with the player's iron.

My own personal experience is that it took a good 6 - 12 months to refine my swing so that I could consistently strike the ball in the way that I wanted. I still work on this every time I'm at the range - for me, it is a process of constant practice and continual improvement.

Regarding your handicap and scoring, well, I think that you need to look at your scores and data to see where you seem to be "losing" your stroked -- whether it be off of the tee, putting (ie: putts per round, etc.) or with your short game (ie: getting up & down, sand saves, etc.). It should also give you a chance to look at your approaches to the green as well (ie: Greens in Regulation and proximity to the hole on approaches). Once you identify the area or areas where you are losing strokes, then you can focus on that area.

And, if you do not work with a golf professional from time to time, perhaps consider doing that on occasion to see where you can focus your efforts and perhaps incorporate some changes for the better. Regardless, enjoy this wonderful journey that golf offers!
  8. Although I'm no expert I think it maybe something you've changed within yourself that has done this and nothing to do with your equipment.
Maybe a lesson with a good instructor could shed some light on your conundrum.

Seek some advice form your local PGA Professional.
It's hard to say but sounds like you have a solid game...might you need a little tune-up???

I went through the same sort of thing when I switched from the 690CBs that I had played for a lot of years. I got fitted for 3 other sets from different manufacturers and eventually bought an off the rack set at the pro shop. I didn't see any improvement when I was switching clubs. I had done something in my swing and didn't see any improvement until I saw a swing coach and he showed me what was happening.

Did you get fit for the AP2 or buy off the shelf? Sounds like you may have a shaft or swing weight issue.

Your thread brings up a couple questions. Did you get fitted for the AP2's? Were you fitted for the TM's you used to use? One thing I would check is the loft and lie of your AP2's against the same with your TM's. Also, Did you change your ball or for that matter change anything since you have bought the AP2's? Whatever the answers are to those few questions, I would be willing to bet something very minor will get you hitting those AP2's like you want. Don't give up on them yet...

Did you get correctly fitted by a Titleist certified fitter?

First of all, were you fitted for the AP2s? If not, that could be part of your issue. If you were, it may not be the clubs but something may have changed in your swing. It may be time for a visit to your favorite PGA Professional.

Did you know if the lofts and lies are different between those clubs. Did you get custom fit?

I would make sure they are specs are consistent as that is prob why you're struggling

  16. Sometimes when you make a change like you did the specs such as shaft, loft and/or lie could all be different...I would zero in on this aspect and identify if something needs adjustment.

Are these the 716 or 718 AP2's? I would assume that based on the date, they would be the 716. Based on the feedback I have heard, the 716 were good, but not great. This could be the reason you are experiencing less than desirable results. I was custom fit in October 2016 and found the CB's actually more consistent and had better feel than the 716 AP2. Since my purchase was delayed, I decided to go with the 718 AP2 because the reviews were great and they had more of a tour look than the 716 (thinner topline, less offset). I also wanted a little more forgiveness than the CB's. Got them about 10 days ago and the 718 AP2's are awesome!!! I would highly recommend upgrading.

The AP3 have also had tremendous reviews so far, and they look like they will fill the void between the AP1 and AP2 for players looking for tour playability, forgiveness AND distance. If you havent taken advantage of a fitting, its definitely worth the money as it alleviates any uncertainty between models and what will work best for your game. Based on you handicap, you will love the AP2's or maybe the AP3's.

    Good luck.

Before going back to your old irons, I would suggest you seek out a teaching professional and take a lesson or two to see if you can get your ball-striking back on track.

I would have a pro check your swing. Something may have changed in your swing an a slight tweek to your swing or the clubs may be needed.

Never go back go forward. Get a swing lesson with a good PGA pro, it's amazing what they can do to open up our thinking and your response to it. Relax and give yourself a chance to improve.

    Burns,

I would strongly suggest getting to a PGA Professional and have them take a look. I would image you had the clubs fitted to you before you purchased so it may be a small change in your swing or possibly the clubs are not fit right.
