  1. I'm a 59 year old 6 handicapper recently had a fitting hitting the AP3 and AP1 I was able to control ball flight equally with both, thinking this was going to be my last iron change for a few years and knowing in 5 years I'm probably not going to be sticking the ball as solid as I do now I went with AP1. Love them!

Echoing others comments, bu5 gapping and feel matter. I’d get fit and know your numbers. I play a combo set of 714AP2 and 718AP3 4 and 5i. My big thing isn’t the club, but more trusting myself to hit the shot under the self-applied pressure of hitting a GIR. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Sounded like you were describing me in your text. I have similar handicap and similar GIR and similar misses. I got the AP3s in October and it's made a huge difference in my game. GIR is going up nicely, the mishits are still solid shots usually. For me between 1 and 3s was the look. I didn't want a chunky looking iron. I love the look of the AP3s and love the performance even more.
  4. Daniel - as you will read, the pundits here opine to visit a fitter or attend a Titleist Thursday event, but I offer my twenty years experience swinging no other brand besides Titleist irons. This includes DCI, CB, AP2, MB, back to AP2, AP3, back to AP2, trying MB again.

There is another post here on Team Titleist where a 22-handicap player shot an 85, which infers he picked up nine strokes switching to AP3 irons. Call me a skeptic, but that is a bold claim just with a change in club type, because as I switched back-and-forth with my iron (never a mixed set) my scores never varied by that many strokes.

In my not-so-humble opinion, you being a single-digit handicapper should consider AP2 or even MB. I am almost single-digit and do not find the MB to be punitive to my scores compared to the AP2. The AP2 looks very similar to the AP3, except with the four-iron and especially the three-iron, at address the back of the club at the sole is visible. For me, with every club the AP3 is ten yards longer than the AP2, and I have a 100 MPH driver swing speed.

All the above aside, don’t go to a fitting session with a pre-conceived notion which Titleist iron is best for you.
  5. Daniel, I am a big advocate of AP1s. But a 6 handicap should be able to handle AP3s, which are more forgiving than your AP2. As recommended above, maybe somewhere at upper end of your bag, if not comfortable with AP3, a few AP1 clubs could help.
Your idea of having AP3 set, a few posts later, with AP1 wedges seems totally weird to me and opposite to normal logic of building the bag. Normally you can have Vokey wedges, AP3 as the main iron set and say a few AP1s on longer end of bag. Currently playing AP2s, having 6 index, that calls for Vokey wedges... do you really want to play greenside shots with AP1s?
    How was your fitting day?
