Not shown in my photo to make the 14th club I have a Tour Edge 7-32 hybrid for hitting out of thick grass. I also bought back my RM21 42* (9 iron replacement). Kept the loft at 45* on the PW because I like the bounce.
  4. Changes since June:

913D replaced the customized G5 driver. Bassara regular flex shaft. Surefit setting A2 (12* loft, lie 1.5* upright). I hit this driver longer and much more consistently than the G5.

913F 17* replaced the 915F 15*; regular flex Bassara shaft, surefit setting D3 (17.75* loft, lie 1.5* upright). For me the 913F 17 is more consistent off the tee and fairway than the 915F 15.

910F 7 wood - 21*; surefit setting now A2, (21* loft, lie 1.5* upright). Bassara regular flex shaft. Great off the tee for short par 4s and long par 3s.

    Titleist 816 H1 25* hybrid (replaced 913H and 915H); surefit setting A2 (25* loft, lie 1.5* upright)

G10 28* hybrid (replaced the G10 32*; standard loft and lie). There is a nice 10-yard gap between this hybrid and my 7-iron, whereas the gap with my 32* G10 was small to non-existent.

Vokey SM6 wedges - 52-08 F (bent to 50*) and 56-08 M, wedge flex shafts. Now there are 6* gaps between all of my wedges.

Ben Hogan "Equalizer" 62* wedge, KBS Tour 90 regular shaft (my first on course shot with this club was a chip in for a par).

Still playing the 714 AP1 irons and my Scotty Cameron Newport (which I bought new 24-years ago). Using this setup I broke 50 for 9-holes on Friday night for the first time since returning to the game in May. I shot 49 (par for the 9 is 34) which included being 8-over for 2 disastrous holes due to dumping tee shots into the water. For the remaining 7 holes, I was the most consistent I have been all year, hitting 3 fairways and 3 GIR.
  5. I had the 913D driver shorted to 44.5" and because my shop didn't have the right weights on hand, they added enough lead tape to bring the swing weight to D1.

Almost identical. I have a 913D2 at 44" with a swingweight of D1. I have a 15g headweight. Since I use an over size grip, I have Winn Excel RF (43g). The difference to a standard grip is almost 2 swingweight points. A Winn Dri-Tac oversize is 48g. The 910F 7 wood and 816H1 25 are my one two punch in the bag.

    I carried a G10-32 between 2016-2018.

I streamlined my main playing bag. I alternate between the 910F 21* and the 915H 21*. The 816H1 and PXG 28 had little difference in distance.

Driver: 913D2 10.5* set to A4 with 44" Bassara R shaft and 15g head weight
    915Fd 3W set to A3 (16.5) with Diamana 70g x5ct R and 42.5" length
    910F 21* set to B2 with Kaili R and 41" shaft
    915H 21* set to C3 with S70+ Regular and 39.5" shaft.
    PXG 28* hybrid with 70g R shaft
Apex Plus 7-8 irons with Hogan #3 (R)
    SM7 46-10F (45*
    SM7 52-08
    SM7 58-08M
    Callie MD3 64/8
    White Ice Putter.

    This is my bag, period.

    913D2 driver 44" Bassara R 15g headweight. A4 (12*)
    915Fd 3W 42.5" Diamana 70 x5ct R. A3 (16.5*)
    910F 21 41" Kaili 75g R. B2
    915H 21 39.5" Diamana S70+ R. C3 (22*)
    PXG 28
    Apex Plus 7-8
    SM7 46-10F (45)
    SM7 52-08
    SM7 58-08M
    Cal MD3 64/8
    White Ice putter.

So some might be asking why I have a 7 wood and a 3H in the same bag. Plain and simple is I knock the daylights out of a 7 wood (I've hit as far as 210 with one but my general distance is 190-200). I hit a 21H 185-190. The 7 wood is also a good backup for the 3W and 3H. the 910F 21 has been a go to club since about 2013 (I originally had one with standard length and a Bassara shaft using A flex); I dumped my old one in 2017 as my ball striking got better (also because I had a problem with pulling). Played a 915F 18* and 915H 24* for over a year and finally started hitting a 3 wood (after 12 years) in mid 2018. The key answer was 915 series are 1/2* flatter than 910 or 913 and I was playing 42" on the 18 fairway. I also found out I have less of a tendency to pull shots with a 70g shaft on hybrids and fairways. The 910F 21 currently in the bag was a chance encounter at Fairway Golf.

  12. Lou - I notice a couple of new clubs...

I also have a Cally PM grind wedge (2 actually -58* and 60*) which I use...great club! What I'm really curious about is the Tour Edge iron wood. How does it fit in the gap between the PGX hybrid and 7-iron?

The Tour Edge Iron Wood 7-32 was a "mad scientist experiment" since I had a gift card from Golf Mart. The distance vs the Apex Plus 7 iron is the same; what came out of that was the 7 iron needed to be bumped to 63.5 lie angle. I returned it and found out "old faithful" (a 910F 7 wood with Bassara A flex that I had carried from 2014-2017) was in the used bin so I got that and some more golf balls; It is a reserve for the inevitable day when I go to A flex (the 910F 7 wood with Kai'ili regular hits better and almost impossible to hit a pulled shot).

The final change is the head on the 3 wood. I used a 913F 13.5 with an M60+ Diamana R flex and 15g headweight last year and actually got some great distance (hit a couple 250 yards). Although I sacrificed a little distance the 915Fd 15* with 70g shaft was more consistent. I took the 915Fd to Golf Mart and played with the shaft vs the 913Fd 13.5 (which already had an 11g weight) and the latter just plain felt better. Took the 913Fd to the range and zeroed it in (B3 setting gives a cleaner deck hit vs A3); I like the more penetrating ball flight.

Lofts in the bag are 12-15-21.75-25-28-33-38-42-45-52-58-64. Distances are 230-210-190-175-165-150-135-120-110-95-75-65.

The PM Grind 64 got its "baptism" last Friday and I got to use it on one bunker shot and a 40 yard pitch. Got out of the bunker and the pitch shot stopped 1 foot from the pin.

Also get better distance with Bassara R vs Bassara A on the driver. I think the smartest move was going from 44.5" to 44" on the driver and adding extra weight in the head (with my 910D I set it at B4 with 44.5; the 913D2 is A4 with 44 and the ball marks are centered) ; although I get a little less distance, I have a tighter dispersion.

My 7 wood has a shaft length of 41" (1/2" short) and it feels great with a stock headweight and 75g shaft.

My profile photo is with the 7 wood. I also have the option with the 17H shown (set to C3). The wedges have the 4* spacing from the 9 iron (42). 46-50-54-58-64. My Sunday bag is 14.25-18-25-33-38-42-50-58-64. Driver is set to 12*.

As one can see, my profile picture contains the entire arsenal of golf clubs. Two 7 woods in reserve: 913F with Diamana 70 x5ct R and 910F with Bassara A flex. My playing bag is as follows:

    913D2 driver 44" with Bassara A flex and 15g headweight. A4 setting
    913Fd 13.5 42.5" with Diamana M60+ Lite and 15g headweight C3 setting
    913F 19 41.75" with Diamana M60+ Lite. C3 setting
    Callie FT Optiforce 9 wood Diamana 62 x5ct R
    816H1 25* with Diamana 72 x5ct R
    PXG 28
Apex Plus 7-8 irons #3 shaft
    Vokey SM7 46-10F (bent to 44*)

    Vokey SM7 54-10S
    Vokey SM7 58-08M
Callie Mack Daddy PM Grind 64/10

The missing link was the 9 wood. I either play a 5 wood and 9 wood or a 7 wood, depending on course.

I also added an 816H1 23* to the reserves. Had a 40" Diamana S70+ R laying around and the club was cheap so I had it shortened to 39.25". Funny thing is the 913F 7 wood (with 41" shaft) gets the SAME distance as the 9 wood (41.5" shaft). I had to find out why and ran into an article about Maltby charts. For every 4* loft change it is 5 yards of distance and 5 yards for every 1/2" of length. So mathematically I should have been hitting the 7 wood 2.5 yards shorter (+2 yards for loft and -5 yards for length).

As shown in my thumbnail, the bag is about as simple as it gets for full coverage. The attached photo is with the 54 and 58-08M (bent to 59) in the bag. For my Sunday bag I carry a miz JPX 900 Hot Metal 8 iron (36*) and leave the driver out. The 46-10F with a loft of 44* is being used as a 9 iron. 50-57-64 is in the thumbnail photo. The 4 wedge setup is 50-54-59-64.

As one can see in the thumbnail, that is the complete arsenal. The 25H just wasn't hitting right so I returned it and bought back the 913F 21 with $10 cash. Also on the way to work, deemed it "smart golf" to keep the Apex Plus 8 iron in the bottom row of the bag (there are a couple courses in San Diego that have some not-so-well-maintained fairways). The original intent of getting the JPX 900 8 iron was a 36* club for a Sunday bag. I liked it so well I returned my 54-10S and an extra 58-08M for store credit and got the 7 and 9 irons. The 9 wood is the missing link in my golf game. In 2013, I had a Steelhead 9 wood in the bag when I broke 80 for the first time. I played with the combination of a 910F 21 fairway and 910H 27 hybrid between 2014-2017 and carried a 34 or 32H until the beginning of 2018. I just got an AP2 6 iron about 3 days before playing Torrey Pines and played with it and a strong AP2 8 iron. For that day I used a 915F 18 fairway (and carried on until the end of the year) and an off the wall 25H.

I switched to using a strong AP2 7 iron and an Apex Plus 8 iron about mid 2018 and switched to Apex Plus strong 7 iron at the beginning of 2019 (works better on terrible fairways). The 915F 18 provided the answer to hitting a 3 wood: shaft length and lie angle. I started with a 915F 13.5 last November and was getting some tremendous distance at the start. As one can see throughout this thread that I had been toying with the 3 wood. I have been using the 913Fd 13.5 since last month and really like the Diamana M60+ Lite shaft (42.5" length, C3 setting and 15g headweight). The 913F 19* performed very well last week in its maiden round (shaft length is 41.75 Diamana M60+ lite and I have an 11g weight on the head; Surefit is C3).

Most of the year I had been playing around with combos of the 816H1 21 and 25. They were OK but nothing spectacular and I just recently found a 9 wood. The 17H was a "science experiment" and was a miserable failure. The 9 wood and two 7 woods are within 5 yards of each other. The 9 wood has a 41.5" shaft and the two 7 woods have 41" shafts (I set both to B2).

Bottom line is the combination 5W-9W-28H or 7W-28H worked before and will continue to work. 50-57-64 worked before for PW-SW-LW. It has been working since the beginning of last year AGAIN and my scores have gone down (imagine not breaking 40 for 9 holes for 5 1/2 years; been on a plateau). It might end up turning out that a game improvement strong 7 iron and a player standard 8 iron would be the winning combo.
  20. My return to the great game of golf in 2019 has been very gratifying on several fronts! It is now late in the season in the New England and I've come to my final setup of the year.

913D w/ Bassara regular flex shaft. Surefit setting A2 (12* loft, lie 1.5* upright), shortened to 44.5".

Titleist 915F 3 wood - 15*; surefit setting of B3 so the loft is actually 16.5* and lie is .75* upright, Diamana red shaft, regular flex. I still LOVE this club off the tee!

Titleist 910F 7 wood - 21*; surefit setting of C3 so the loft is actually 21.75* and lie is .75* upright. Illima 70 regular shaft, 1/2" longer than standard. My repair guy thinks it might actually be a 5-wood shaft.

    Titleist 816 H1 23* (set to D3; 24*) and 25* (set to A3; 27*) hybrids.

G10 32* hybrid (standard loft and lie)

Titleist 714 AP1 irons - 8-Pw; standard loft and lie, Kuro Kage regular shaft

    Vokey SM7 - 50*, 12* bounce (F-grind wedge) and 58*, 14* bounce (K-grind), both with wedge flex shafts

    Vokey WedgeWorks - 54*, 16* bounce, K-grind; KBS 610 wedge shaft.

    Wedges in reserve - Vokey SM6 54-10S, 54-08M, 62-08M, Cally PM grind 58*, TM HiToe 58*

Cameron Newport putter - purchased new by me in the '90's.

Hybrids - The G10 32* hybrid is back, replacing my 7-iron. I am much more consistent with the hybrid. I now have two H1 hybrids set at 24* and 27*

Wedges - One thing that I learned (re-learned, LOL) this season, after playing with a SM7 58-14 K-grind, is that bounce can really be your friend! Overall, I have gone to much more bounce than I started the year with and find the added bounce helpful out of bunkers and not an obstacle to chipping.

As one can see this is my final setup. In reserve I have a 910F 21* with Bassara A flex (B2 41.5") and Apex Plus 7 and 8 irons (32 and 38). All grips are Winn Excel RF Oversize. The lofts are 12-14.25-19-23-27-32-36-40-44-50-54-57-64.

    Set makeup:

    913D2 driver 44" Bassara A flex with 15g head weight A4 setting
    913Fd 13.5 42.5" Diamana M60+ Lite with 15g head weight C3 setting
    913F 19 41.75" Diamana M60+ Lite B2 setting
    Callie FT 9 wood 41.5" Diamana 62 R
    816H1 27 37.75 Aldila Rogue 85g R A2 setting
    Miz JPX 900 Hot Metal 7-9 irons (32-36-40) NS Pro 105 R.

All wedges have DG WedgeFlex and standard lengths

    SM7 46-10F (44*, 64.25 lie angle)
    SM7 50-08F (1/2* upright)
    SM7 54-10S (3/4* upright)
    SM7 58-08M (57*, 1* upright)
Callie Mack Daddy PM Grind 64/10 (1.25* upright).

    White Ice putter.

The 816H1 was on clearance for half price and still had the wrapper on it. Swingweights of most clubs are D1-D2. Wedges are D4 - D6. The 54 is "nice to have" but I could play with 44-50-57-64. My "10 club challenge" is 3W-7W-25H-Miz 7-Apex 8-44-50-57-64 and the putter. Distances are 230-215-200-185-170-155-140-125-115-100-90-80-65. Nearly got a hole in one with the Miz 8 iron.

I had a shootout between an 816H1 25 (with Diamana M60+ R), a PXG 28, Adams Idea 6 and the 27. They all hit the same distance with the 27 and the Idea 6 most consistent. What cemented the 27 is choke down shots were way easier. I was spraying choke shots on the 25 and the PXG. I got the 54 out of the demo bin for the returns and trade in. The 816H1 27 is almost like hitting steel and swings more like a 6 iron but with more distance.

In 2008, I had G10 23-28-32 with Apollo steel shafts. Could hit the 28 and 32 pretty well. I carried the G10 32* between 2016 and 2018 (9 bucks, what the heck).

The 913F 15 hits better than the 913Fd. I put an L flex shaft on the 913Fd and gave it to my daughter. I changed the shaft on the 913F 19* to Diamana 72R (setting B3). The 913F 15 and 19 have the same shaft now (Diamana M60+ x5ct Lite) and headweight (15g); lengths are -1/2". I shortened the 9 wood to 41.25" The only spares left are the two Hogan irons and an SM7 54-10S. Importantly, the 15 and 19 are set neutral (B2) and hit dead straight.

27H has Aldila Rogue 85g R. 7 and 8 irons are DG R300. Wedges are DG Wedgeflex.

Game improvement irons are useless on bad fairways. The 7 and 8 are forged.

Final entry. As the thumbnail shows, I added an SM7 60-14K to the lineup. Returned the SM7 54-10S and the 7 iron back to the store. I was out banging balls with the 7 iron at 34* and the distance difference was maybe a couple yards. I experienced that same thing with a 24H and 27H awhile ago.

The 14g head weight is now in the driver. I may take a bit of a leap and open up the loft to 11.25.

Some ask "why senior flex on the driver and fairways" and heavy regular on the hybrids? I tend to have a small fade with regular on the driver, 3W and 5W; a senior shaft makes it straight. When I get to the 7 wood or hybrids a senior shaft misses left. For hybrids, I've been playing a 70g regular for over a year and a half because it keeps the ball in the middle. It is almost impossible to pull it with an 85g graphite and 95g steel; furthermore they swing like irons now. "Progressive flex" seems to work for me.

I started out with a 32H (G10) at the end of 2017 and here it is end of 2019 and it is back. Tried 6 iron or strong 7. OK but not spectacular. I played with an SQ 7-34 between 2012-2016 and went to G10 32 for extra distance.

  29. Glad to see the G10 32* is making a comeback; I love mine!

What is the loft on the JPX 900 Forged 8 iron? I ask because per some charts it is 35* and some 38*.

It stated 38 at the miz site. The actual loft of mine is 37*.

My bag since last year has evolved. In January, I bought a set of 695MB irons with S300 shafts. I shortened them by 1/2" and made the lie angles 1/2 degree upright. I also went to an 816H1 23* vice the 9 wood. I changed my shafts on the hybrids to Diamana S70+ stiff. Just before COVID I bought SM8 wedges 50-08F, 58-08M and 60-04L. I set the 58-0M to 57*. Returned the 60-04L after the golf courses reopened in May and got an SM8 46-10F and bent it to 44* (shelved the 9 iron). Changed the shaft on the driver to stiff. Added a 913F 13.5* with Diamana 70 stiff (42" shaft and 14g headweight). Toyed around between 913F 21*, 816H1 19* and finally back to 913F 19*. Had to put a 1/2" shaft extension on a 70g Diamana S for the 19F (had it set to 40.5 for the 7W) and installed a 17g headweight (you lose 1 swingweight point with a shaft extension). Went to Bassara Stiff on the driver. Just recently added an SM8 54-10S to make 14 clubs. Also just before the COVID shutdown, bought a Scotty Cameron putter.
